About Eskimo
It all really all started with my parents, they were addicted to movies too.
From an early age ‘bonding with dad’ meant spending quality time at the tiny independent movie store, where we spent so much time they could’ve charged rent. I grew up on a steady diet of Bruce Willis action movies and 80′s comedies.
My folks picked my name from movie credits and followed tradition when my brother was born.
Conversation at the dinner table revolved around what we thought of the last movie we watched, whether we had something to watch tonight or whether we had to hire something.
Whenever anyone in my family got dressed for something, my mum would say, “Lookin good Billy Ray”. It was a treasured family saying. Imagine the devastation when I discovered that it was a direct movie quote from ‘Trading Places’. I’ve since discovered all the other ‘family sayings’ are also movie quotes.
In my house Christmas meant the usual flurry of shredded wrapping paper, presents, a lot of food and the family gathering around the tree – I mean TV and watching a Die Hard marathon.
So you see…
I really had no chance…
I was inculcated from an early age to eat, breathe and sleep movies.
And of course to love ‘The A Team’ where I reviewed the episodes in my year two diary. This prompted my teacher to discuss my TV habits with my folks who admitted my movie watching habits weren’t much better.
Where was I?
Oh yeah – Its all their fault!
And when I have kids I intend to pass on the family traditions and values that my family hold dear.
Watching Die Hard 1, 2, 3 at Christmas
Being on a first name basis with the clerks at the video store
Stealing quotes from films instead of creating family sayings
Critiquing films around the dinner table
Naming my kids after movie stars, film titles or credits, hmmm Maybe Tarantino for our first born?
Hmmm maybe we’ll have the first 5 year old to write, act and direct their own feature film.
Now there’s a dream.
